Selkie by wolfanita Selkie by wolfanita
Made for a Mini Contest on :icondigital-art-fantasy:

Selkies are creatures from the Scottish mythology. they look like seals but can strip off that skin and look like beautiful girls beneath.
if a human finds the abandoned skin while the selkie walks around in her human form, he can hide it from her and force the selkie to marry him, but that's definitely no good way to start a relationship.

Regarding male selkies, wikipedia says: "Male selkies are described as being very handsome in their human form, and having great seductive powers over human women. They typically seek those who are dissatisfied with their life, such as married women waiting for their fishermen husbands. If a woman wishes to make contact with a selkie male, she must shed seven tears into the sea."

Now, that's a slightly better way to start a relationship, isn't it? ;)

Indeed? Well, there are many, many variations of myths. I just knew male selkies as rather, well, unpleasant guys. Maybe the version you mention came up because the ladies thought it was unfair that just the female selkies should be pretty and all they can get are storm-causing monsters (I heard selkies do that to revenge all the slaughtered seals). But I won't complain...;)

Some of the folks over at TvTropes were thinking that this image might be really good as a page image for the Selkies and Wereseals page. Would you grant your permission for it to be used?

I saw that on TvTropes not too long ago, and I was like "No way! It's from DeviantArt to here?!" But hey, this picture's the perfect Trope image for the selkie trope. :)

I love this story! I was told it when I was a little girl, and I used to always watch the seals in the River Tay waiting for one to turn into a girl :L
Such a beautifully coloured picture. Perfect!

and you live quite at the source for selkies - all I have here are gnomes and dwarves and I didn't even see one of them. unreliable supernatural beings...;)
