I have waist-length blonde hair and everyone says my hair does this when I leave it down.

I also had long (dark blonde) hair for some time. It was permanently getting in the way, even as a braid, so I cut it and had it short now for the last years - it's much better.

This always astounds me in fight scenes. I have waist-length hair and always have to keep it in a bun during martial arts class to keep it from getting in the way or providing my partner with a hand-hold on the back of my head. Much as I love my hair, it just isn't practical to have it loose during a fight.

Not to mention the way it smacks pedestrians in the face when it's windy out! XD

That's why I cut mine long ago. If you look at the elves between filming, you can see that they wear a kind of tights over their wigs so they don't get tangled. It doesn't work in real life, even for elves.

Now I have a mental image of all the elves wearing hairnets and then scrambling to take them off when company comes over. XD

Either that or tons of hairspray - the real reason why Greenwood became Mirkwood: Its air polluted by vain elves!
