The Silmarillion: The Aratar by wolfanita The Silmarillion: The Aratar by wolfanita

The Aratar are the highest of the Valar, the gods of Middle Earth.

Melkor’s been naughty and is no longer counted to them, but I drew him anyway.
I did draw them all more 'casual'; without armour or wheapons and not dressed up in all their (fearsome) majesty.

A short and easy Who is Who:

Melkor:
He was the first and most powerful, but grew a bit too individualistic and ambitious; in the end he became the enemy of the other Valar, was named Morgoth (meaning as much as ‘foe of the world’) and can be held more or less responsible for anything bad ever happened to anybody in Middle Earth.

Manwe: Melkor’s brother (in the Valar way of kinship), Lord of the air, winds and birds, king of the Valar. Manwe doesn’t understand the nature of evil, which might explain why Melkor got away with so many things.

Varda: Lady of Light and stars, Manwe’s wife, queen of the Valar, most feared by Melkor (she rebuffed him) and most loved by the elves who call her Elbereth.

Ulmo: Lord of the sea, who had a soft spot for the mortal world and liked to wander there (or swim), in a form that appeared quite fearful to non-godly eyes.

Aule: Lord of crafting and substances, godly smith and creator of the dwarves who call him Mahal. In his creativity he is similar to Melkor, which might explain why he employed two guys who were later known as Sauron and Saruman.

Yavanna: Lady of plants, giver of fruits, wife of Aule. Because she was afraid that the inhabitants of Middle Earth would destroy nature, the Ents were created.

Orome: Huntsman of the Valar, he likes to hunt in the woods on his white steed Nahar and slay monsters on the way; at one of these occasions he discovered the first new born elves. He’s very popular among the people of Rohan.

Nienna: Lady of mercy, grief and mourning, she taught a lot about pity and wisdom to somebody later known as Gandalf.

Mandos: Also known as Namo, ruler of the dead and judge of the Valar, brother of Nienna. He’s said to be quite grim, which might be no big surprise considering he (almost) knew everything yet to come.

*blushing profusely* Oh, my, such a suggestion! ...I doubt I'd be able to be very coherent were he ever to show up. I'm too much in awe and admiration and, ah, well, he's rather ahem eh, nice to look at too... yes. I keep blushing, you know. I blame you for putting that thought into my head! \^_^/

It's nice to see that there are still some people left who still have the dignity to blush at all.
If you look at modern media, you get the feeling most people don't feel ashamed for anything anymore...;)

It's quite a cliché that the evil brother has black hair, but since Melkor is the Lord of Darkness, it made sense for me that he should have. And it looks cool. ;)

Black haired people don't turn grey but silver. I, being naturally blond, will get boring mousy grey hair.

I love this far, far too much.

Manwe: Come on, please?  For me?
Melkor: Why are you here?

Ulmo: Fuck this shit, fuckers running away.  I'm going to go prank Aquaman some more.

Yavanna: Care to taste my fruit?
Mahal: //BRAIN OFFLINE//

Mandos: You know, I could use a weapon.  Those dwarves are going to arrive en masse soon, may as well be welcoming.  Fuck, Orome won my sword in poker.  Wonder if that scythe's still lying about?

Also, I'm quite proud that my closet resembles the one Nienna and Mandos must have shared in their shitty first apartment. XD

*scrambles* *tries not to fall off chair*
I COULD CRY. I COULD CRY JOYOUS TEARS OF NERDLY KINSHIP.
Ahem.
I'll try to restrain myself.
I just love everything about this. The juxtapositions were a neat choice too, like with Morgoth just looking so unimpressed at poor slightly clueless Manwe... *sigh* dorks. I just love how Varda seems to literally be glowing from within like a star and just askjdfahsldkf so pretty. Aule and Yavanna have just always cracked me up because this right here is how I've really always pictured their relationship xD Poor Aule. He was just trying to combat unemployment...
Anyways, this is perfection, LOVE IT.

OHMYGOD OHMYGOD OHMYGOD you've done the Valar! :-D

This is fantastic. I love the way you've given them such distinctive personalities; and their designs make them immediately recognizeable. To be honest, when reading the book I always saw them as these vague, glowy, but rather disembodied figures - whereas here they have a physicality, they look 'elvish' but with that added godly dimension. Interestingly, this lineup really made me see how much of an Olympian vibe these guys have (except that they're benevolent).

Varda's outfit makes me think Queen of the Night meets Erté. It's brilliant.
Mandos is hieratic and perfect.
Nienna is beauuuuutiful.
Mr. Ulmo is pretty cool. Would love to see HIM go all Poseidon on Tuor!
Love the look that passes between Aulë and Yavanna! (these two are so adorable. Gotta love the practical ones!)
And the fact that Melkor looks like he's ready to punch Manwë in the face, just for being so annoyingly positive all the time.
And Oromë! The cloak pinned on the shouler and the horn just give him that Rohan touch. Just <3

I wonder, are you going to do individual portraits of them in all their fearsome majesty?

Thank you! :aww:

I also had no real picture of them in my head till I made the costume sketches. The faces happened while I drew them; especially at Orome I thought: So that's how he looks for me! Who would've known! (bit multiple here)
The Valar are quite a mixture of the Greek and Nordic and Celtic gods; when I learned who was who I did that via Ulmo=Poseidon and so on, which worked really good for me; also for the mixed ones. There where also some who had rather disrespectful nicknames which I shouldn't repeat here. ;)
Yes! Maybe not in ALL their fearsome majesty, there are many people who could do that much better, but in medium majesty.

Excellent versions of the Aratar (plus an ex-member), they turned out great! Clap  The portraits all reveal something of the main personality/focus of the particular Vala, which is really better than just doing a picture of a pretty woman in a blue background & calling it "Varda", for instance.

Calling Morgoth 'naughty' is an understatement on the order of calling The Great Depression 'bad for business' and no mistake!

Please accept my compliments on a fine array of Valar, by the way!:) (Smile)

In my case (I'm German) it means that I've forgotten all the French they've once forced me to learn in school to be able to speak a halfway decent British English (and I guess it also helps I'm good in history). ;)

I must admit that your English if infinitely better than my grasp of Deutsch (if pressed I can manage a greeting, a farewell and an expression of gratitude but admit that this isn't really very much at all!); I would also like to note that a good grasp of History is not surprisingly useful, but IS useful in a surprising variety of ways.Nod

For example it seems that Portugal will be kept busy consulting past precedents to cope with a three-nil thrashing!
