The Silmarillion: The Lesser Valar by wolfanita The Silmarillion: The Lesser Valar by wolfanita
After the Aratar, here are the Valar that are not as powerful.

To my personal surprise they were much more difficult to draw than the Aratar, maybe because there isn’t much info about some of them and it’s a bit vague what kind of deity some of them actually are.

A  short and easy Who is Who:

Lorien:
Also known as Irmo, Lord of visions and dreams, brother of Mandos and Nienna. His beautiful garden was a place to rest and refresh.

Este: Lady of rest, healer of hurts and weariness, wife of Lorien, slept during the days in their garden.

Vaire:
The godly weaver; she weaves the story of the world, wife of Mandos.

Vana: Also called the Ever-young, the younger sister of Yavanna and wife of Orome. Flowers sprang and birds sang when she passed.

Tulkas:
The champion of the Valar, came to their aid against Melkor. Though he’s the most warlike of the Valar, he likes to laugh and is not easily made angry, but if, he’s also very slow to forgive.

Nessa:
Quite a lively young lady, Nessa could outrun a deer and loved to dance. She’s the younger sister of Orome and married Tulkas.

Wow, Lorien is holding a flower! I love Este's expression. She seems to say, "Come and rest, all who are weary." ;) It's nice to see Vaire, Vana, and Nessa here. They seem quite unimportant in the book. (I only read The Silmarillion yet.)

So Nessa is Orome's sister? I see you drew them quite similar in style. :) Although I can't see how the Valar could be siblings, like Melkor and Manwe, Nessa and Orome, and Lorien and Mandos and Nienna (if I'm right), since they were created by Eru, not born of parents.

Great job! :D

Thank you! :D

They are not realted like humans are, but they were related in Eru's mind when he/she/it created them. At least that's how Tolkien puts it. In all polytheistic religions the gods have family somehow. :)

You're welcome. I always look for your art and see if you post a new one. :D

Oh yeah, I've read about that but it's still strange to me, hehe. In Greek mythology, the gods and goddesses are really related (have same parents/father/mother).

Thanks! Yes, I know (I was quite an expert in Greek mythology in my teenage years). I always found it most disturbing that Zeus is not only married to his sister, but also has a daughter with his other sister who will marry his brother (her uncle). Quite horrible, especially if you have siblings yourself. ;)

I love your depiction of Nessa! She's my favourite Valië after Varda ^^

These are fantastic! I especially love Tulkas's facial expression! :D Great job! Also I was wondering, do you plan on creating designs for some of the Maiar as well? :)

You may ask and of course they are among them. ;) All named Maiar except for the later Blue Wizards and balrogs.

Great job! Out of curiosity, is Lorien the founder of Louth Lorien, or I am just really confused?

No, he isn't. Lorien's real name is Irmo, the garden where he lives in Valinor is called Lorien, which means, as far as I know, as much as 'land of dreams' and he's named after it.
Lothlorien, where Galadriel lives has nothing to with him. The same language is used, so both 'dreamy' places have the -lorien in their name.

Since she's the lady of rest, I thought she just puts you in her arms and that grey veil thing over you, so you can see or hear nothing more of mobile phones, emails or ranting bosses...;)

I really love these images. I learn so much about the Tolkien mythos. Makes me want to give the Simarillion another try.
Great work as always.

I think it's worth another try - one only has to read a bit between the lines for the real dimension of the stories. I think I said that before - I didn't like it at all when I read it the first time.

I was also like 12 or 13 last I tried. Coming face to face with that just blew my mind I think.
Then again I was only 10 or 11 when I read Lord of the Rings for the first time... at least that has a narrative.
I remember getting hat book for christmas just before the first movie came out, I had not heard of it before. Blew my mind at the SIZE of that book. But looking back it was one of the greatest gifts I have ever gotten.

Not entirely sure it's an age thing; I was twenty when I read the Silmarillion for the first time, and I remember I really was frustrated about all those names (and I have a good memory for names), and then every character had at least two names, and some of the most interesting aspects of the stories were written between lines (like in LotR). The only story I reall could fully remember later was the one of Beren and Luthien. I think one really has to make clear for oneself that this is a mythology, no novel, before reading. Then it's cool. ;)

Yes, I expected a flowing narrative.
And I do not think my age helped any either. It was a lot of information and I was just *boom*.
I do believe that Simarillion gives the Lord of the Rings give a whole new light.
