Description
From Tolkien's " Silmarillion":
Very short and easy:
Feanor (the most short-tempered elf ever born) and Fingolfin are half-brothers.
Feanor created the Silmarils (gems with divine light in them) and Morgoth (aka Melkor), lord of darkness, stole them (cause he can).
So Feanor made an oath to pursue anybody who unrightfully laid/lays hands on the Silmarils with all his wrath (and he has plenty).
He convinced most of the other Noldor elves to leave Valinor and return to Middle Earth to fulfil that oath, which brought to his family a curse from the Valar, leading once more to the common betrayal, hurt ego and bloodshed.
Feanor left Fingolfin on a lonely shore, sailed away and instead of returning to fetch him, he burned all the ships (duh).
Since Fingolfin and his people had to take the dangerous overland route where many of them died, you can't talk of a healthy sibling rivalry anymore.
